چکیده

[i] The surface roughness of Mars at scales from ~ 1-200 m is of interest for lander hazard and radar-sounder clutter analysis, but MOLA data are the only current source of global topographic information. We use synthetic fractal profiles to determine the uncertainties associated with deriving self-affine statistics irom detrended segments of MOLA tracks. The mean Hurst exponent derived from such segments is an underestimate of the true value, H, for H > 0.5, and an overestimate for H < 0.5. Values of H from independent samples along a profile are distributed about this biased mean value. The magnitudes of the bias and variance in H increase for shorter segments. Terrestrial topography data show that extrapolation of roughness statistics to smaller scales based on self-affine relationships is uncertain. Roughness at the 1 -15 m scales may be poorly correlated with topography at >100-m scales. We suggest that any extrapolation be regarded as a lower bound on the true terrain statistics.

Online Mars Dem Derived from Mola Profiles

Introduction: The topography of Mars is a key parameter for the understanding of the geological evolution of the planet [1]. Topographic data for most applications are represented as Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). DEMs are characterized by their spatial resolution (distance between neighbor points on the topographic grid) and the accuracy of elevations. The resolution and accuracy required de...

The relationship between MOLA northern hemisphere topography and the 6.1-Mbar atmospheric pressure surface of Mars

To assist in targeting of landers and to enable comparison of new elevation data to previous topography models, we have re-determined the position of the 6. l-mbar atmospheric pressure surface on Mars with respect to surface topography from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA). The 6.1-mbar surface lies, on average, 1600 m below the geoid-defined zero level of MOLA topography, which occurs a...

Strength of Faults on Mars from MOLA Topography

The stresses which must be maintained on faults bounding the rift topography at Tempe Fossae—the “North Tempe Rift” (NTR)— and Valles Marineris (VM) on Mars are estimated, using a simple elastic model and topographic data from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA). The absence of rift-flank uplift at the NTR is consistent with an elastic thickness, Te, of 20 km or greater at the time of rift ...

Technical Note An evaluation of interpolation methods for Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) data

The Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) instrument on the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft has returned a large amount of data on the topography of Mars. It is possible to generate high resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) from these data by employing data interpolation techniques. Four interpolation algorithms were selected for testing on MOLA data: Delaunay-based linear interpolati...

Gridding Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter data with GMT: effects of pixel size and interpolation methods on DEM integrity

High-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) based on Mars orbiter laser altimeter (MOLA) data provide geospatial characterizations of Martian topography. MOLA range data are essentially two-dimensional topographic profiles. Transforming these profile data into three-dimensional DEMs requires the interpolation of a continuous surface between MOLA observations. To this end, we outline a metho...
